Grief AND LOSS Counseling
“The loss of my partner through death or separation has fundamentally
changed my life. How can I find a way to cope with the pain? What if
my family and friends are there for me, but I need a neutral perspective? "
Part of our lives
We experience grief when we lose something that has become part of our lives: a loved one, a life situation (e.g. separation or divorce, children moving out), security, our job, physical abilities or health. Grief often leads to sadness, anger, loneliness or fear.
Often, a long-standing loss does not allow you to find peace and you need professional support.
1. When is grief and loss counselling advisable?
Grief and loss counselling can be helpful if you have experienced a loss that is having a lasting impact on your life. This could be the death of a loved one, but also a break-up, the loss of a job, the loss of health following a medical diagnosis. If you find that you are struggling to find peace of mind on your own, professional support can help.
2. What kinds of loss can trigger grief?
Grief does not only arise following a loss through death. Changes such as a separation, divorce, children leaving home (‘empty nest’) or the loss of life plans, health or job security can also trigger feelings of grief. These experiences are personal and can be very distressing.
3. What feelings are normal during the grieving process?
Grief can manifest itself in many different ways. Feelings such as sadness, anger, fear or loneliness often arise. These emotions are a natural part of the grieving process and should be given space in grief counselling.
4. How does grief counselling help with coming to terms with a loss?
In grief counselling, you receive support in finding your own personal way of dealing with the loss. Through conversation and reflection, you can better make sense of your feelings and, step by step, regain stability and a sense of direction.
5. Can a loss that happened a long time ago still be worked through?
Yes, even losses that happened a long time ago can still have a powerful effect and cause distress. If you find that a loss is preventing you from finding peace, grief and loss counselling can help you process it emotionally and develop new perspectives.
